a grain of salt

The thing that makes me aware that there is more in heaven and earth than is dreamt of in your philosophy Horatio, is beauty. The beauty of the world is essentially gratuitous. The most beautiful things, as Ruskin says, are often the most useless, ‘peacocks and lilies for example.’

Salt has never been the first thing I think of when beautiful comes to mind, but there it is
